Live Demonstration: Laser Welding Mark Removal at Customer Site

This week, we dispatched one of our experienced engineers to a customer site in Jiangsu Province, China, for an on-site demonstration of laser cleaning technology focused on welding mark removal.

The customer, a leading manufacturer of valves and connectors, serves critical sectors such as the nuclear and natural gas industries across multiple countries. With a strong reputation for reliability and precision, this company has long been one of our valued and loyal clients. Over the years, we have supplied them with a range of equipment—including flange dot peen marking machines, laser marking systems, handheld laser welding machines, and fully automated platform welding systems. The consistent performance and reliability of these machines have earned their trust and strengthened our long-term partnership.

Traditionally, the manufacturer relied on manual grinding methods to remove welding scars, especially on components that required a high level of corrosion resistance or surface finish. However, welding marks on standard joints were often left untreated if the application did not demand it. Recently, due to the acquisition of a new client in the chemical industry, the demand for quality and corrosion protection in pipeline connectors has significantly increased. Manual grinding, particularly on irregularly shaped parts, has proven inefficient and inconsistent in both results and productivity. This challenge prompted them to reach out to us for a demonstration of laser cleaning solutions.
Our engineer traveled via high-speed rail, bringing along a 300W air-cooled pulsed laser cleaning system, featuring 15 mJ energy per pulse. Upon arrival, we conducted a series of tests to evaluate the removal of heat tint and oxidation from the welded areas of stainless steel connectors. The customer’s goal was to eliminate the colorful oxide layer caused by welding, thereby ensuring maximum corrosion resistance while maintaining a smooth, clean surface appearance. They also wanted to compare the cleaning results with those achieved using a 4-in-1 handheld laser welding machine they had previously acquired from us.

The results exceeded expectations. The laser cleaning system efficiently removed the oxide layer without damaging the base material, producing a visibly cleaner and more uniform surface than manual grinding or combined welding-cleaning systems.

Based on this success, the customer proposed an integrated solution. They decided to incorporate a pulsed laser cleaning module into their existing automatic rotary laser welding platform. Our engineer worked closely with their team to design a seamless integration: the galvanometer scanning head and support column were mounted directly on the rotary table. An independent touchscreen interface was installed for parameter adjustment, and the laser cleaner was electronically linked to the welding system to receive start/stop commands in sync with the welding cycle.

To achieve both efficiency and cost control, the customer opted for a compact 200W pulsed laser with 1.5mJ energy per pulse. A delayed start/stop feature was implemented to ensure proper timing between welding and cleaning operations. Thanks to the excellent beam quality and control precision, no additional air-blowing or smoke extraction systems were required.

Moreover, due to the high volume of uniquely shaped parts requiring handheld welding, the customer decided to purchase the demo unit brought to the site. They also added several accessories, including laser safety glasses and protective goggles, to ensure operator safety.
Currently, our engineer has joined our sales and technical support team at The 26th China International Exhibition on Gases Technology, Equipment and Application, where we are proudly exhibiting as a member of the Chongqing Gas Industry Association (CQGIA). You can find us at Booth No. 3-064, where we are showcasing our latest innovations in laser welding and cleaning technology. We warmly welcome industry professionals, manufacturers, and partners to visit our booth, discuss your specific application needs, and explore how laser-based solutions can improve your productivity and quality standards.
